Recently diagnosed…Type 2?

<< Does anyone know of a good health supplement to prevent diabetes?  Both of My Feet are Swollen and Infected? >>

After blood tests, Dr. said my blood sugar was high and it had been for a year or more. Not sure if this is officially type 2 diabetes, or it can be controlled by weight loss (Im 6′1″, 260) He perscibed duetact, but I gained about 20 lb s in 4 weeks on it. He switched me to Glimepiride and Metformin now. I have started to workout and swim 4 days a week, and am trying to shift away from carbs in the diet.

Anything I need to watch out for, or supplement the diet with? Also any issues with drinking or sex?

Doctor should have done an HgA1C (or just A1C) test. The A1C is a simple blood test, most doctors can do it in their office in 5-10 minutes. That will tell you the AVERAGE blood sugar level over about three months. Non-diabetic is between 5 and 6. If the A1C is over 7, the doctor should order a Glucose Tolerance Test, which will definately confirm that you are or are not diabetic.

Yea 6′1″ 260lb is a little large (I’m 6′0″ 260). We both need to be below 250. I’ve been heavier, and dropping the weight makes a huge difference.

You’re on the right track — cut out the sweets, cut down the carbs, up the exercise. You should be able to get under 250 with no problem. After I started walking a mile a day 5 days a week, I dropped 15 pounds in three months.

But you DO need to cut out the alcohol. That is just empty calories. Absolutely useless. I don’t now what effect alcohol might have on the medications, either. Could make them useless as well.

And if you don’t control the diabetes, you will have sex problems. Diabetes destroys the nerves, and that is crucial “down there”. Viagra and such won’t help if you have neuropathy. So control the blood sugars NOW to avoid the problems later.

Your doctor also needs to check your cholesterol, HDL/LDL, and triglycerides. Most diabetcs also suffer from high cholesterol, which causes heart problems — and sex problems.

You may want to have the doctor refer you to an ENDOCRINOLOGIST. They know more about diabetes than the run-of-the-mill GP, and you’ll be better off for it.

you should’nt be drinking. not only can it mess up the medicine you are taking but diabetics should’nt drink it all because you have to watch your kidneys. sex, i think you’re ok.

Try to live your life as healthy as possible! You definitley need to lose some weight (no offense) and that should help regulate your sugar. Stick with lean meats and vegetables. Try to incorporate lots more veggies into your diet. The swimming is a good start, but you need more than that. Start by walking, or buy a bike. Then running, etc. You know what to do.. . just start doing it! FOR YOUR HEALTH!

I am a CMA and ex wife of a diabetic.
Metformin will cause you to gain weight and become very tired it is a side effect.
Booze has a lot of sugar and calories. Booze can cause you to go into a Diabetic Episode ( Happened to my ex husband) Diabetes does cause ED.. Continue to be active and eat right and make sure you take your meds.

    Good Luck

I'd watch out for cutting carbs out of your diet. You have Type II Diabetes, and it can be controlled through weight loss. However, if you eat a diet high in fat (which is the alternative to carbs), you risk heart disease and high blood pressure, and stroke, which tends to go hand-in-hand with Type II Diabetes. The thing to remember with Diabetes, is that you never recover from the damage it does (it's degenerative), so your best bet is to start living as healthy a lifestyle as possible rather than trying to get down to a certain weight and then starting to live that way.

Get a doctor who's an expert in Type II Diabetes, and talk to a nutritionist about making smart changes to your diet.

The #1 thing you can do is to stop eating junk food and fast food.

Exercise is also important; especially aerobic exercise for 30 minutes at least 4 times a week.

Drink in moderation (one or two a week), as alcohol IS sugar.

    Good luck.

I am Type 2 diabetic and I take those same exact meds. The only thing that I have a problem with is I now have diarrhea with the Metformin after every meal that I eat I am literally running to the restroom if any of the food contained carbs.

Working out and swimming are great ways to help with diabetes, as is any form of exercise. As far as things to watch out for….watch the carbs.

Also something important to watch is your feet. Diabetics have to take great care of there feet as any sores or cuts can take much longer to heal . Also make sure there is no numbness or tingling happening frequently as this can be a sign of neuropathy. (A form of nerve damage) If this happens make sure you talk to your doctor right away.

I will tell you that there are a few side effects from taking Metformin. They are usually stomach cramps and diarrhea. Usually though once your body becomes adjusted to it those symtoms will go away.

Drinking is usually not the best thing as alcohol raises blood sugar, but as an adult it is your right to have a drink if you want to.

I’ve never had any issues with sex. But it is like everything else. If you don’t feel good or are depressed then it is hard to feel in the mood, but I have never had any effects of diabetes effecting my sex life. (Like meds or insulin)

Good luck to you. I know it can seem overwhelming at times, but just take it one day at a time.

    Hugs,
    TinkerTeri
