My mom has had diabetes for 28 years. She has many complications: heart failure, kidneys at 25%, foot ulcers, diabetic neuropathy, very poor eyesight, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. She has had ketoacidosis numerous time. She was admitted to the hospital with sugars of 1420 and sepsis a year and a half ago. She left the hospital with an infection of the throat at the time, and 1.5 years later, she still has it. Her A1C is 12, and she regularly runs sugars over what her meter reads (which is 600). We’ll hear her slurring her words, and have seen her falling asleep mid conversation.

The reason that this is complicated is that she hates hospitals, so the time her sugar was 1420, my dad had to wait until she slipped into a coma, before she would go to the hospital. He called the ambulance before that, but she refused treatment. She is also afraid of getting fat. Now my mom was never slender, but obese didn’t fit either, when she developed diabetes. She thinks that if she takes more insulin, she’ll blow up like a cow. She was diagnosed with MODY. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maturity_onset_diabetes_of_the_young ) Her only brother WAS morbidly obese, and died at the age of 45. She blamed the insulin. While insulin may have played a role, he was always fat as a kid, and drank regular soda, ate whatever he wanted, and just took extra insulin to cover it. Now insulin used to be pork based and would cause weight gain. She isn’t reasonable. She weighs about 140 at 5′4". I told my dad that there is no sense to worry about weight if you go blind or are dead. Her eyesight is so bad, she has tripped over the bright yellow parking "blocks" in a parking lot and broke her nose twice. She has fallen down stairs, because she couldn’t tell they were stairs. She thought it was still flat. She swims nearly ever day for about 1 hour at a time. She will have severe lows and passes out from them (3 times in the pools locker room). She is considered a brittle diabetic. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brittle_diabetes). I realize that low sugars aren’t fun. I’ve had sugars in the upper 40’s and 50’s and you feel like crap. Her’s will go into the 10’s and 20’s.

My father is 75 and my mom is 66. It is very stressful for him to deal with her. She is rarely out of bed. If she spends a total of 6 hours out of bed a day, he is lucky. It is normally broken up with naps, etc.

I hate to see my mom this way, although I realize that it is mostly out of my hands. I’m as prepared as you can be for the loss of your mother. I’m worried about my dad. (I’ve never been particularly close to him, but both my sister and I easily see him outliving her.) My mom refuses to make a will. No, I’m not looking for anything. There is little if any personal assets of hers. I want to make sure there is a plan for what happens if she ends up in a vegetative state. She was quite lucky that the last time she didn’t die with sugars of 1420. She was in a coma with brain swelling for a few days, but luckily didn’t lose any limbs.

Since she refuses to leave a living will, or power of attorney to my dad, is there anything I can do? Do you know if he could petition the courts for power of attorney?? She doesn’t make sound medical decisions. She has a history of suicide attempts during menopause. She refuses medical care when her sugar is out of control, which is often. When her sugar gets over 600-800, she starts becoming unreasonable. She’ll say it’s the flu, instead of the diabetes. She has also had multiple TIA’s. When she had heart failure and she was filling up with fluid, she thought she was developing asthma. Duh! You don’t develop severe asthma one day at the age of 60. I’ve had asthma for a couple decades. I know what asthma is. She wouldn’t believe me when I told her it wasn’t asthma. If it comes across that I’m angry at my mom, yes I am. I’m sick of her forcing the family to watch while she plays with life and death.

Can my dad, or somebody else get the legal authority to commit her to a hospital for medical care? Can my dad get power of attorney over her for legal decisions? Any options? Thank you for your suggestion:)

Way back in the day, I had a Sony Clie, and then a treo 650. There was software called Logbook DM. It was absolutely badass. Not only did it do all the log entries and normal graphing, but if you were on a pump, you could input all your biometrics (height, weight, etc), and you basal rates and bolus sliding scale numbers. Then, when you ate, all you had to do was enter "big mac" and it would tell you how much insulin to take. I had never been in better control.

Isn’t there anything like that for Android?

Bit of background.

My grandmother is insulin dependent
My mother is diet-controlled

I am almost 29, am I am the first to admit that I am overweight (189lb), but I am trying to lose weight.

Thirsty alot of the time.
Urinating an average of 6 times in 4 hours or so.
Vision goes blurry sometimes and my eyes go dry and sting when this happens.
Not much of an appetite but still struggling to lose weight.
Bruising easily (don’t even know I have banged myself until I see the bruises).
Cuts take anything up to 2-3 weeks to heal.
Chronic pins and needles in my left hand (pinkie, ring finger and middle finger, hand and up to elbow).
If I don’t eat at certain times I get the shakes and go pale and clammy.
Permanently exhausted, can sleep for 10 hours but am tired again within 4 hours.
Horrendous depression, but to be fair I am prone to depression since having my oldest child 10 years ago.
Also, don’t know if it is related, but my period is also playing me about, it is now 4 days late, and all I have had is feint spotting (no I am not pregnant as my husband was sterilized over 4 years ago, plus I have no interest in sex what so ever)

I went for a drink the other night and got given regular coke instead of diet coke and my goodness did it make me feel sick! I don’t really like lots of sweet things, but I have had to start carrying Lucozade in my bag or a snack sized bar of chocolate in my handbag or work incase I get the shakes.

I went to the GP due to the pins and needles thinking it could be carpal tunnel and she said it wasn’t that as I had full range of movement in my arm and that she was going to test me for diabetes.

I am now kinda worried about what they are going to say on Wednesday when I go back! The idea of having diabetes itself doesn’t scare me as such as I have seen my mum and grandmother cope with it so I have grown up around diabetes. It is more the idea of explaining it to my children and the possibility that they could end up with it.

The other possibility my GP mentioned was thyroid problems but she seems to think diabetes is more of a possibility.
OK, so the lucozade idea has had to be scrapped.
Took a bottle to work with me yesterday and after 3 sips of it I felt so sick! Have also realised that the pins and needles in my hand tends to start within seconds of having something with sugar in.
Will get my blood test results in 48 hours so for now, no lucozade and nothing sugary!!

I adopted him 6 years ago from a friend who couldn’t take care of him any longer. He is fixed. He was overweight and prone to urinary tract infections. 2 years ago, he was diagnosed with diabetes. A couple thousand dollars later, 2 insulin shots a day and special diabetic food, his sugars have been controlled, he lost weight and has gone into remission (no longer considered diabetic) and for a year has been off his insulin.

I had a baby 9 months ago. The cats (I also have a 3 year old male and the cats gets along great) were both fine when the baby came home. About 3 months ago, the cat in question started pooping on our bed and our guest bed. We have since barred him from both rooms, and he seemed to be doing fine…until now. I just recently discovered that for the past week, he has been peeing on my baby’s pkayroom floor tiles. There is no way to stop him. I am scared to death that my baby will contract something from his urine (I know the ammonia can be dangerous for babies) and to be honest, I cannot afford to even bring the cat to the vet anymore since he’s already cost me thousands and costs me over 0 a month just in food as it is. I am not working as I am off with the baby, so funds are extremely limited.

What do I do? do I put him down? Is it worth bringing him to a shelter? Would anyone really want to adopt a 14 year old cat with a history of UTI’s, diabetes, peeing and pooping on the floor/furniture and a 0/month food bill?
I love my cat, and this is an extremely difficult decision for me. I want to do what is best for him, and I know this would be to bring him to the vet. Unfortunately, my child comes first, and having the money to feed her is my priority. Since I cannot afford to pay a vet hundreds of dollars to diagnose him I(if there even is a diagnosis available), I’m really at a loss of what else I can do.

Sorry about the confusion…the babie’s playroom is not her bedroom. She is never changed in the playroom, so there are no dirty diapers in this area. Also, this doesn’t expalin the pooping on the beds issue either.
Of course I have tried to see if anyone would be interested in adopting him, but nobody is. I live in a small community on an island with no humaine society, only 1 shelter. There are no foster programs in my community.
While I appreciate people are passionate about animals, please don’t compare a cat to a child, mother or any other human being. Asking me if my mother was dying of cancer would I put her down? Really. That’s going a bit far.

Today, I was feeling a bit sick so I took my blood sugar at 1hr instead of at 2hr and was horrified to find it about 170. At 2 hr it was 109, so it’s fine… but it worries me that it spikes like that. And then the morning fast number again is a fail at 98. The doctor seems unconcerned, since he’s watching for anything above 105 for fasting number and since my 2 hour after breakfast is consistently under control no matter if I exercise or not. But I don’t trust him.

My nutritionist seems to believe I should be retested for diabetes because she thinks I’m having hypoglycemic reactions and he flubbed the test the first time (didn’t carbo load 3 days beforehand as well as didn’t do it at a good time for me and my body cycle.) My fasting, 1st and 2nd numbers were failing in the glucose 3 hour challenge, my 3rd number was hypoglycemic (close to 70.) She said she thinks that I had a delayed reaction because of the hour the test was at, and then had a spike in insulin high enough that I went hypoglycemic on my own, and doesn’t feel like insulin would be a good idea in my case because of that. But it worries me that for that hour after I get up my insulin response is ’sluggish’. I’ve opted for the ‘better safe than sorry’ route.

Has anyone had any similar experiences? Does anyone have any hints on how to bring my fasting down better? My night-time snack usually is carrots, dip, and then maybe a yogurt or something that has the 2 carbs I need. I’ve had people recommend replacing the carrots with celery+peanut butter, since the protein may help. Is that a good idea?

Doc seems to believe baby is not getting too big anymore since the diet and seems very pleased with how my weight has leveled off and blood sugars are under control.

im really a nice person, and ive had this disease a very long time and im okay with that- but these are just a few things that drive me insane. I don’t mind explaining diabetes to people ive spent years answering "yes i can eat whatever i want, i just take insulin" every time (and there have been many times) that people ask me if i can eat that. Ive even shown people how to do all that i have to do, its fine. and im sure there are many people with other diseases that go through the same thing and i invite you to explain any grievances you have with the world in your disease so that i don’t do anything to annoy someone with it.

I try to image picking up a bag and just leaving, pretending that i COULD do that and that i wouldn’t have to make a list of how long id be gone, how many site changed that would be, how many things of test strips id need, what kind of batteries i might need and how many and the back ups in case the site doesn’t go in right.

back when i was out of high school and didn’t know what i wanted to go to college for, but needed to make up my mind so i didn’t loose my parents insurance.. i picked several different courses and signed up but took my time just pretending i could take a break if i wanted.

And I try very hard not to say "hi my names diabetic jane" I don’t care how many times ive been told, or i say to others "its just the way my life is, its normal’ i wish i could grab a cotton candy and just eat it without thinking test. calculate, take insulin. and im sure there are many people with diabetes or other diseases that also act and say its just the way life is, and make jokes when really every so often we all just curse that we got stuck. and maybe some don’t. most days it doesn’t bother me, but then some days it does… oh and warning to any diabetic doctors on yahoo. if when i have a child who’s diabetic; and they try the scare tactic…the doctor should be very afraid.
hi, thanks commenter #2. just so you know- not running. ive had diabetes for a very very long time, since i was 8. and i do take care of it. And yes it is a slow death-it basically rots your organs. My dads going throught that now, the diabetic neuropathy. I have eczema (common in diabetics) in my ear canal. it a delight. It is a diease that should be taken seriously however they need to come up with something other then the scare tactic. Im not going to have my kids go through what I did. The saying you can take a horse to water, applies to diabetes (even some of the doctors i went to when i was younger say that.) It didnt matter that they frightened me- i was too young to understand or care especially through the teenage years. The one doctor told my parents that with all the hormonal changes it was going to be a bumpy ride no matter what. I didnt get control of my diabetes until i wanted to have control.No one has to agree with me,these are my opinions. i just want more for my kids.

Im really sorry how tough things with your husband are, I haven’t had to go through to much besides having about 10 kinds of infections a year because the diabetes makes us easy targets. Ive always thought lows were the worse, going high can be a toll on the body but lows are scary to me, high i just feel sluggish and sick but when im low i can loose my eye sight but that only happens when i drop to 30 which thankfully isnt often. IF you stop by again maybe we could chat, is there anything else the doctors can do for your husband? setting him up on a pump, or that new constant glucose pump thing might help control his lows. althought insurance companies are alwasy difficult. ok thats next

So two years ago I was diagnosed with PCOS (though they suspect I’ve had it for a long time since I was a kid because I had unusually high insulin levels and weight [for my lifestyle] even though I was a pretty active kid and didn’t have diabetes) and vWD (von Willebrand’s Disease) which caused me to have six-month-long periods. They gave me blood transfusions, birth control pills, yadda yadda…Now here we are, two years later. I’d missed my period for six months again, while on the pill, and then eventually stopped taking the pill because I was getting extremely sick…A month and a half ago, they jump started my period with progestrone (agestin or something like that) put me back on the pill (aviane) and I was still bleeding so much that it would run down my legs whenever I got up, and my underwear and clothes and pads were sopped with blood (sounds gross, I know, but an important detail–it was like someone just gutted me from down there and left me to bleed, like some excessively grotesque horror movie). Last week (Monday) I went to the ER and they put me on Low Ovral (then sent me home because my hemoglobin was just 10.5 and no serious drop), four pills for two days, then three for two days, two for two days, and then one a day. I was still bleeding, and what’s more, I got extremely sick. They’d also prescribed Zofran for the nausea but my insurance would only pay for a five-day supply and so I have to use it very wisely. Now I’m still bleeding, even more just after I take the pill and then SLIGHTLY less a few hours after, I feel hungry all the time but at the same time I don’t want to eat because everything makes me want to throw up (I tried filling up with water and fruit but that only makes the cramps and nausea even worse), I get excruciatingly painful cramps and very bad headaches, I feel in a daze, sometimes dizzy, and I have this constant pain in my stomach and just below the uterus that worsens on top of the cramps and LOTS of vaginal cramps. I’m also sluggish, sleepy, and fatigued–I can’t even walk up steps without feeling winded. I started to sleep untill NOON when I’m used to waking up at 6am. While I used to go on walks for HOURS nonstop, practice dance routines for two hours straight every day, and go to theatre/dance classes on weekends, now I can’t even practice a one-minute routine without feeling like I could just collapse on the spot. I can’t even stand for long periods of time. Everyone keeps saying it’s because of my weight (I’m 90lbs over, even though the PCOS counts for a lot of it) but I’m LOSING weight now (pushing myself to exercise regularly but not as intensely as I used to) and there’s still NO DIFFERENCE. If anything, things are getting worse. I notice now that I can’t even eat a slice of cake or a single veg’n candy bar (which I don’t do often) without it sticking to the ugly, annoying fat I’ve already got. Furthermore, I’m a VEGETARIAN. No one seems to think it’s strange that a vegetarian who is as active as I am is THIS fat. Furthermore, everyone in the doctor’s office tends to dismiss a lot of my symptoms because they believe that fat people can’t be as active as I was.

That’s the same mentality that got me to a 3.5 hemoglobin two years ago, and still trying to push myself (walking through unbelievable heat and long distances) to prove that I wasn’t a weak person (which was what I thought and what everyone told me before I got diagnosed) and thus almost KILLING myself. Now everyone’s doing the same thing–calling me a lazy fatty, making me eat less even though it makes me sick, telling me I’m doing all this to myself, making me out to be weak as a woman (girl, really, since I’m sixteen).

I seriously think something is wrong with me. Right now I’m in and out of very bad pain and nausea. I have a terrible headache and feel dizzy sometimes as I am walking. Should I perhaps go to the hospital? Do you think something is really wrong with me? What the hell should I do? I’m so frustrated!

Also, I get checked regularly for blood sugar and insulin levels and the doc said that my frequent exercise and healthy diet is keeping the insulin down and that my blood sugars are all normal. I doubt I have diabetes, even though everyone keeps suggesting it. I also don’t have all the symptoms of diabetes, just one or two of them and the same symptoms could apply to a LOT of other well-known illnesses I’ve researched…certainly not a basis to diagnose me with diabetes. I also get my cholesterol levels checked and though my triglycerides are SOMETIMES just a little high, nothing serious has happened and I usually keep it down. The "Good Cholesterol" has been at a good level.
Got checked for fatty liver as well…found nothing.

Now I’m still bleeding, even more just after I take the pill and then SLIGHTLY less a few hours after, I feel hungry all the time but at the same time I don’t want to eat because everything makes me want to throw up (I tried filling up with water and fruit but that only makes the cramps and nausea even worse), I get excruciatingly painful cramps and very bad headaches, I feel in a daze, sometimes dizzy, and I have this constant pain in my stomach and just below the uterus that worsens on top of the cramps and LOTS of vaginal cramps. I’m also sluggish, sleepy, and fatigued–I can’t even walk up steps without feeling winded. I started to sleep untill NOON when I’m used to waking up at 6am. While I used to go on walks for HOURS nonstop, practice dance routines for two hours straight every day, and go to theatre/dance classes on weekends, now I can’t even practice a one-minute routine without feeling like I could just collapse on the spot. I can’t even stand for long periods of time. Everyone keeps saying it’s because of my weight (I’m 90lbs over, even though the PCOS counts for a lot of it) but I’m LOSING weight now (pushing myself to exercise regularly but not as intensely as I used to) and there’s still NO DIFFERENCE. If anything, things are getting worse. I notice now that I can’t even eat a slice of cake or a single veg’n candy bar (which I don’t do often) without it sticking to the ugly, annoying fat I’ve already got. Furthermore, I’m a VEGETARIAN. No one seems to think it’s strange that a vegetarian who is as active as I am is THIS fat. Furthermore, everyone in the doctor’s office tends to dismiss a lot of my symptoms because they believe that fat people can’t be as active as I was.

That’s the same mentality that got me to a 3.5 hemoglobin two years ago, and still trying to push myself (walking through unbelievable heat and long distances) to prove that I wasn’t a weak person (which was what I thought and what everyone told me before I got diagnosed) and thus almost KILLING myself. Now everyone’s doing the same thing–calling me a lazy fatty, making me eat less even though it makes me sick, telling me I’m doing all this to myself, making me out to be weak as a woman (girl, really, since I’m sixteen).

I seriously think something is wrong with me. Right now I’m in and out of very bad pain and nausea. I have a terrible headache and feel dizzy sometimes as I am walking. Should I perhaps go to the hospital? Do you think something is really wrong with me? What the hell should I do? I’m so frustrated!

Also, I get checked regularly for blood sugar and insulin levels and the doc said that my frequent exercise and healthy diet is keeping the insulin down and that my blood sugars are all normal. I doubt I have diabetes, even though everyone keeps suggesting it. I also don’t have all the symptoms of diabetes, just one or two of them and the same symptoms could apply to a LOT of other well-known illnesses I’ve researched…certainly not a basis to diagnose me with diabetes. I also get my cholesterol levels checked and though my triglycerides are SOMETIMES just a little high, nothing serious has happened and I usually keep it down. (im 15, i have PCOS and im not REALLY over weight, but im 5′1 and about 135 pounds and im trying to lose 20 pounds but its sooo hard i just can’t do it ! ) P.S. If my doctor allows me to take metformin i will most likely be taking birth control with it…
