In 1990 the founder of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Ingrid Newkirk told a reporter that if an AIDS cure resulted from animal research, “we’d still be against it.” I appreciate the efforts that animal activists put forth on securing animal rights, emphasizing that animals are not ours to be tested on. However, when it comes to ensuring human life, I disagree. Should we not take the best lead we have to cure a disease like AIDS, which has already killed 28million people? Should we take thousands of animals and place their lives above millions of people, which they have saved and will save? Scientific effort based on animal testing is a sacrifice that must be made to pledge the safety of human health. Without these mammals for testing, scientific progress crucial to the safety and development of medicine and food will drop sharply. If humanity risks such a decline in scientific progress, people around the world will face limitations on food and future medical treatments.
The most important reason humanity requires animal testing is to solve medical issues. One of the advantages of animal testing is the ability for medical procedures to be run safely and efficiently on humans after testing it on animals. Open-heart surgery, which is now the most common form of heart surgery in the U.S, required about 20 years of animal testing on cats by Doctor John Gibbon of Jefferson Medical College to ensure safety and efficiency. Unfortunately, not all medical procedures pass through sufficient testing before entering the market. The Food and Drug Administration distributed a jaw implant called Vitek in 1983, without sufficient testing. This malfunctioned jaw implant resulted in thousands of people suffering from severe pain when their jaws were literally torn apart. One year later, scientists tested the Vitek jaw on canine dogs, which resulted in immediate jaw damage and erosion. Had the FDA required such testing, many painful and permanent injuries would have been prevented*.
In the past, many diseases like Polio and Diabetes killed hundreds of thousands of humans. The only way scientists were able to combat these diseases was through animal testing. One of the best accomplishments made through animal testing was the vaccine for polio developed in1955, an epidemic that killed about 60,000 people a year, targeting primarily children. A doctor named Jonas Stalk was determined to find prevention not with his patients, which several scientists tried and failed, but within his lab. Injecting approximately 17,500 monkeys with the disease, he was finally able isolate the three viruses that caused polio and developed a vaccine for each that was able to prevent humans from getting Polio.
Today, people take the wellness and life span of diabetes patients for granted. Before 1969, the fear of severe Diabetes was much, much greater. According to the Nobel Prize Committee and Medical Doctor Andrew Dexter from UCLA, patients back then with sever diabetes were only spared a few more years by following extreme diets and undergoing constant pain. Luckily, two Nobel Prize winning scientist, Frederick G. Banting and John Macleod, discovered Insulin from experimenting on a dog with Diabetes and another dog without. By removing the pancreas, an organ that regulates sugar, of a dog, diabetes developed in the dog a week. However, when injecting the diabetic dog with a pancreatic formula, called insulin, extracted from the healthy dog, the diabetic dog lived a healthy life as long as it kept receiving the injection. This proved to be true in humans as well because patients who died from diabetes had a damaged pancreas. When Insulin was distributed throughout America to humans, patients with severe diabetes with only days to live recovered as long as they kept receiving their injections.
Unfortunately, scientists are unable to find a cure or treatment for every disease. Animal testing alone provides a huge potential for scientists to find a cure for today’s toughest diseases like AIDS. First off, scientists require thorough information on the virus before looking for a cure. Fortunately, this was made possible by examining similar immune deficiencies syndromes in mice, cats, and monkeys. One major understanding the AIDS Foundation discovered was that the AIDS virus is a retrovirus, meaning that it can only duplicate with a special enzyme, or “helper” chemical. The majority of mammals possess these similar enzymes, each producing a different disease similar to AIDS. Anyway, I got suspended a while back for testing my blood sugar at school. A substitute seen me, and thought I was shooting up or something. She confiscated my tester (and anyone who has diabetes knows that it doesn’t look anything like a syringe) and threw it in the trash, and took me to the principal. Since they have a ZERO tolerance drug policy, they said I’d have to go through with the suspension and there was nothing they could do. (I tested in the bathroom, btw. Not just out in the open).

So anyway, my parents decided to get me a pump – more discreet, easier for getting insulin and testing my sugar. Since then, I’ve been getting kicked out of classes by subs or new teachers or even getting sent to the principal by random teachers / monitors in the hallway for having a "cell phone" on me, without a chance to explain. I even got yelled at and humiliated in class because I was doing something on it since it started beeping.

I don’t want to sue the school or cause more trouble than it’s worth .. I just want the harassment to end. I feel like I’m carrying a weapon or something, more so than diabetes.

It is a drug used to make insulin work more efficiently, my numbers are a bit high, but in the "pre-diabetes" category. My normal fasting without the drug ranges from 85 – 110, and my one hour after meals ranges from 105 – 150.

I am 30 weeks pregnant, and even clear liquids are making me vomit. I can keep them down long enough to prevent dehydration, and am drinking some sugar water to try to keep my blood sugar from getting to low, but I can only hold it down for an hour max. My fever is 101 after having taken 2 tylenol 1.5 hours ago.

I am a student at Standley Middle School concerned with health, diseases caused by various meats, and animal cruelty. Animals are being slaughtered at 7 billion per year, and a 1.6 billion percentage is used for human consumption. The animals we eat today are abused and kept in factory farms or slaughterhouses, and bred in small places where they must live a horrifying life without their parents. By eating meat, we participate and encourage these horrible acts. It is finally time to take a stand and protect the environment and our animals by saying no.

Although it is said that meat is especially healthy and valuable, as you can see it is not entirely necessary for your body. Meat carries many nutrients, as well as diseases and problems such as diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, heart disease, high blood pressure, and general cancer. Fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains are all you really need to maintain a healthy organism. Vegetables and fruits are the main sources of nutrients and contain many vitamins and minerals which protect against the harmful diseases that meat provides and does not encourage animal cruelty. It may seem easy to be omnivorous and consume meat, while still protecting against it’s diseases. However, lack of complete vegetable intake is now believed to cause tumor diseases, cardiovascular disease, and degenerative diseases. By not eating meat, you’ll be eating fewer chemicals that are stuffed into the many meats we know today. Fortunately, vegetables contain vitamin A and C, which decreases your chances of cancer or any of the above listed diseases by 46%.

Our body needs a lot of calcium, protein, fibers, carbohydrates and fats. Generally, fats are obtained from eating meats. However, meat only contains saturated fats, which come from animal sources, while plants and minerals contain healthy unsaturated fats which can easily substitute for fatty foods in order to maintain a healthy organism. Although a fiber-based diet lowers bad cholesterol, it also helps with digestion and comes from fresh fruits and whole grains, such as whole-wheat bread and brown rice.

If someone were to treat dogs and cats as other animals are treated in factory farms, they would be convicted for crime and put in jail, but what makes those other animals any less important? Today, the majority of these animals are kept in such cramped places that they can barely move, they are denied any veterinary care, abused and tortured while still conscious, and finally slaughtered. Today, farm animals do not have any legal rights the way household pets do. They are fed drugs to fatten or “spoil” them, which genetically alters them to grow at a much faster pace. Many of these animals are not slaughtered at all, but die within their own weight instead- gained from these various harmful, aging drugs. Centers for disease control state that “70-90% of chickens are infected before they are shipped to markets for sell.” Vegetarianism a healthier lifestyle that does not encourage the cruelty of these defenseless creatures.

Although each animal suffers a great deal of pain, they each do this differently. Cows, for example, are drugged to give a larger amount of milk than naturally given, often never see their babies again, and are hung and left to die when they are too old to produce rich milk. I believe that many vegetarians believe the fair treatment of all living creatures should be legalized to prevent this cruelty. Take a stand against this treatment and say no. I’ve been dating a girl I love very much since October 2008.
She broke up with me 2 or 3 times over the last year, but we always got back together
within a month. She never once cheated on me, never would, VERY trustworthy, and stayed
celibate throughout our breakups as well. However, she is an alcoholic and has a problem with aderol (speed), which she has been prescribed for years. I am addicted to painkilers. We both smoke pot. We lived in a house alone together that was her mom’s but eventualy foreclosed.
However, when we did live there, my mother came to stay with us in January ‘09, but sadly passed away from alcoholism and complications from diabetes and hep c in March ‘09. We lost the house a few months later… We broke up for a little while, got back together, and she stayed with me at a friend’s, and at my father’s. It was during this period she seemed the most loving. However, when we were at her house, I got lazy… Always chasing drugs, never getting a job… Everytime she wanted to end it, I swore I would get a job, loved her, blah blah blah, and then relapsed into my old ways. But she was patient, honest, a great friend, for a long time. About Septemberish of this year, she started living with and babysitting for this family that knew her mom. So she didnt need me for a place to stay anymore, wouldnt give me the phone number to where she was at, but still met up with me at places a few nights out of the week to stay overnight together… She was still my girlfriend, but things were strained. I was kind of a jerk, and we somehow ended up as I guess friends with benefits, and she would be my girl again, and stay loyal in the meantime, until I got a job and pulled my shit together… This went on for a few weeks, I didn’t get a job. I became more and more desperate, more of a loser… Her quality of life had obviously improved, and she was fond of the 9 year old boy she babysat… Well, things were pretty strained… About 3 weeks ago, she decided to break it off… I should have been a man. But I cried and cried all that night begging for another chance. I know that isnt appealing. But forgive my manners, she did let me go down on her for a minute or two, probably out of pity, then abruptly stopped it. Weird I know. I really do love her, I truly do. I understand, ya know… So I somehow managed to not call her for a few days… Now from the get go she wanted to stay friends, but I couldnt handle knowing she could see other men, or I could be near her but not hold her, not cuddle or make love with her… It was hard. So 2 weeks go by and I havent seen her but we talk on the phone… Although she only calls back when she says she will half the time… Anyways, I get a call about a week ago at 2 am and she’s up the street at a bisexual friend of mine’s house, asking me to come over, because he was hitting on her I guess… I got there and he was pissed and ended up locking us out of his room, which was fine by me, because I could be alone with her. She flinched at the thought of hugging me… I know she hasnt been seeing anyone… But she was drunker than shit and did let me sleep on the couch with her.. She just kept saying I needed to pull my life together for me, and not her… that things would be okay… but later said she’d never be my girlfriend again. I haven’t seen her since then, but have talked to her on the phone… She canceled coming with me to my grandparents for christmas in another town, so i went alone.
So, ladies, I know now that I love her. I should have tried harder. She is truly one of a kind and I know I could never love anyone like I love her. She has said she would never ever be my girl again before and has… But she seems firm on it this time. However, I really would get a job, sober up, do whatever I have to do… except she’s heard it al before and doesn’t know how serious I really am this time. Her mom thinks I should just pull my life together and it will work out… But I dunno.
She still calls me and acts a friend, but avoids the topic of a relationship. Apparently she’s even lost attraction for me. APPARENTLY… I don’t know what to do anymore… I’m ready to give up on life, and not just because of her, my mom’s death, my friends gone, and now her? I’ve lost a big love in my life before and put everything I had left into this girl… I’ve won her back before.
I know being putty in her hands, being a desperate, sad, sad, guy obviously isn’t going to make her want me back… Last I talked to her was the 23rd of December, she told me what she wanted for X-Mas and said she’d call me later… She never did. I wonder if she’ll

I’ve been thinking about committing suicide, here is a reason why my life is complete ruined, when I was like 7 years old I got sick twice a month my parents only got me tested once and I got sick when I was near a lot of dust mites they didn’t even try to give me more vitamins, so they descided to home school me (they didn’t even try to put me in priavte school) anyways few years later my mom stopped since I through fits but I remember my dad asking my mom if she was home schooling me and she lied, well after that when I turned 13 then I started staying by myself since I feel weird being around people and a year or so later my mom gets a job then about a year after that she has a bf and leaving my dad (she cheated on him 4 times before I was born) anyways my dad tried to kill himself few times but he stopped and just started smoking a lot like 4/5 packs a day killing himself slowy he won’t even stop, but now I am at 275lbs 5.6 and I’m 18 and when I ask my dad to make an apointment to get me checked he just says: "he will later at work" then when he gets home he just says he forgot so my health is pretty bad I am sure and he doesn’t really care.

He is in bad health 49 years old with diabetes, he smokes a lot may be close to lung cancer and continues so if something happens to him I will get half of his farm (10k a year max) 250k which will be split with my brother and I will get the house, but after all the bills is paid I won’t have enough to pay electric etc.

And no one is gonna hire me I have no way to go since I live 9 miles out of town with no bike my dad won’t take me I have zero friends, my mom hates me, I have no ged, I have no way to apply for ssi so what can I do?

I have a social problem so I can’t go to job corps, I have no education so no one will hire me even if I was able to get there, if I were to walk I wouldn’t have no where to stay since my grandma and everybody hates me.

So please tell me what can I do without killing myself? I’m really close I’m locked up in my room all the time, and if my dad passes away I will kill myself cause I will not live like on the streets.

And trust me there is no god I prayed and prayed I really believed in him but he didn’t give me any help, make me feel good, no will power nothing…

So there is no god if so then he hates me.

Also I don’t eat right since my dad has women over all the time and well, I HATE being around people so I don’t even come out to eat if I have to use bathroom I just go to bed till midnight or something..

:::I propose an ‘insurance’ like system for all people that will cover the major health issues almost all people will face sometime in their life. I mean the big things that insurance companies don’t like to cover now because of the costs: Cancers, diabetes, surgeries, heart/brain/organ failure/complications, and other things of the sort. But when it comes down to check-ups, emergency room visits, sprains, etc., why can’t the individual patients pay out of pocket for these smaller problems?:::

If insurance was set up this way, the benefit of a free market, competition, would kick in and start to lower prices. If we shopped around for a cheaper physical (for example), hospitals would have to lower prices to get your ‘business’. Why pay 0 at this hospital when the clinic down the street only charges 0?

The current insurance system is the reason competition hasn’t decreased prices. We pay insurance and insurance pays whatever that hospital charges. Hospitals don’t have reason to charge less, they get your ‘business’ regardless what they charge.

This question is already long and I haven’t addressed the alternative solution, universal health care, but quickly I will name the serious problems: no competition means doctors don’t have to be better, they don’t get payed more to do a great job compared to a quick, average job. Doctors will be encouraged to treat patients quickly (doing a rush job…) because of the increased waiting time (you are naive if you believe adding another 45ish million people to our hospitals won’t slow things down).

And don’t believe that government does health care better when they are responsible for only 4% of the drugs on the market today. The rest were all created by the private sector looking to make a profit. Profit is necessary in the health care system! Universal health care means no profit, no inncentive, no improvements…

:::So, who else wants coverage for major health issues (you can’t be turned down or get your coverage cancelled)? I’ll pay for my check-up (and shop around for the best price), and maybe chose healthier lifestyles to keep myself out of the doctors office, but I can be secure knowing if I get really sick, I’ll be taken care of.:::

I know this question is very long, but it’s about something so very important. What do you think about my health care solution?
There’s a lot of nit picking in the answers. Of course my solution needs fine tuning, it’s just the broad idea of it. People, the American people, would need to decide what is something they need to be insured for.

-The mother with 2-3-4kids: You’re ignoring the price decrease from competition. Once we care what we pay, hospitals will need to advertise the cheaper prices, to get more people to chose their hospital when their kid gets a cold.

-And the private, profit seeking sector does things so much better. The reason we don’t see it working is we don’t care what we pay for the small things. We pay insurance and insurance pay’s whatever they want. We take insurance out of there, and hospitals need to reflect what we are willing to pay. Profit, greed, is beneficial. I’ll chose to get my physical at the clinic, pay less, and tell my friends it’s hundreds cheaper. It’s how competition works.
